The Best Car Alarm of 2018
For as long as I can remember, the first thing everyone I know did when they got a new car was get it tinted and have an alarm installed. For a long time, this seemed like the cool thing to do. Today most cars come with some UV protection and many luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz come factory tinted and with transponder keys that have built-in keyless function making the need for window tinting and car alarms something of the past.
Personally, I never cared for Car Alarms.
I found them unreliable and more of a nuisance than a thief prevention product. I mean how many times have you heard a car alarm honking or blaring and look to see whose car was getting stolen or vandalized? Car alarm of the 80s and 90s were so annoying that those of us who grew up in that era have desensitized to the constant beeping, honking or blaring of a cheap car alarm. Besides, what about all those studies that show that cars are still being stolen even with car alarms!
The latest in Car Alarm Technology.
This article came to be when my friend told me he was getting “Car Alarm” installed on his new E350 Mercedes Benz. Yes, I also said, “What?” It so happens that my friend is getting the SmartStart system by Clifford. This is not your father’s car alarm. The SmartStart system by Clifford relies more on convenience and technology than honking and beeping!
The Mercedes Benz E350 already came with a RFID key, impact glass and a basic security system that honks the car horn if the system detects intrusion without the use of the RFID key. This system disables the car’s computer so that even if the steering column is busted, that car does not start. You do not even have to put the key in the ignition, just have it in your pocket!
Except for an impact sensor, this by itself is better than what many car alarm system can offer regarding reliability and ease of use. The addition of the SmartStart system took this concept to another level. I say “addition” because that SmartStart system integrates into the car via a custom interface (provided by the manufacturer) directly to the car’s computer where the factory alarm system resides.
The first thing the SmartStart system by Clifford does right is it does away with the remote! Yes no clicker, remote or key handle to lose or break. This system uses your smartphone to lock, unlock, remote start, roll up the windows, roll down the windows, pop the trunk, honk the horn, and what I think is the coolest, track your vehicle using GPS technology. No more walking around the parking lot, holding the remote up in the air, hoping to trip the panic function on your car alarm. The SmartStart system by Clifford works via a Smartphone app available for the IPhone, Android, and even the Blackberry platform. You can also control multiple vehicles, and I hear the company is working on a home security products that interact in the same manner as the SmartStart system. One thing’s for sure this is not your father’s Car Alarm!
